Family Collage

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Ever since I visited Laurie’s house almost a year ago, I was inspired to create a photo collage on the wall similar to the one she had in her beautiful home.

I started out collecting frames, and then came the big chore of choosing what pictures to put in them.  I went through all of our scrapbook albums and marked my favorites.  I loved walking down memory lane!  With five kids I had to make sure that I created equal “face time”.  That’s hard especially when, for example, with Michaela (14) we have WAY more pictures (and at different ages) than we do of Elijah who has only been with us a year and a half.

Oh, and just when you’ve narrowed down your choices and think you are set, you have to figure out if your prints need to be vertical, horizontal, large or small!  I also ended up rearranging the living room a bit to open up this wall.  Phew!  This is why it took me months to accomplish, but I love the end result.  I love glancing at the wall as I walk through the room and being reminded of so many special moments in our family (gotcha moments, birthdays, a baptism, and just every day smiles).  He has been good to us and we are blessed to be family!

Thanks Laurie for your inspiration!  It’s a good thing you didn’t tell me in advance how much of a chore this would be, but I’m so glad I kept chugging along with the project.  :)

P.S.  I discovered one of the best things while doing this project.  3*M sells those little velcro “command” things that keep you from having to poke all sorts of nail holes in your wall.  They are the best!

The Sabbath

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

As I blogged about earlier, this year in school we are focusing on the period of Creation to the Greeks.  Throughout the year we will be learning about and celebrating the Jewish feasts.

We started out by observing the Sabbath, as traditionally as possible.  Throughout the week we prepared for the weekend ahead, but especially during the day Friday we worked to make this a special and memorable “event”.  We prepared the meal, we cleaned, we made special crafts, and we learned a lot of the background behind some of the rituals during the Sabbath.  Even though we are obviously not Jewish, this is our ancestry, we are God’s people.

We began our Sabbath at 7:46 pm on Friday, the time of sunset according to Benjamin’s investigation.  Yes, we ate our dinner that late!  The meal included special prayers, blessings on each of the children, singing of a hymn, the lighting of the candles, the washing of our hands (ceremonially in the white water bowl), blessing and drinking of the “wine” (grape juice), and the breaking of the challah bread (made and hand woven by Mom and Benjamin) with blessing.  We also had a candlestick salad that Michaela had prepared.

While this was so very different from our regular family meal times, the kids took it all in stride and thought it was great.  They enjoyed helping prepare for all of this and the specialness of the occasion.

Today we kept the Sabbath as a day of rest and just enjoyed being together as a family, playing games and sharing together.  At 7:45 pm (sunset tonight) we blew out the candles and passed around the spices to smell (covered matchbox with cloves and cinnamon sticks) to remind us of Jesus death and the fragrance of new life that we can carry on with us through the new week.  Then we went outside together to watch for the first three stars signifying the end of Sabbath.

There is so much more meaning behind each of the rituals and traditions.  We followed a great book, Celebrating Biblical Feasts, that adds meaning to the traditions so that we as believers in Jesus Christ can appreciate the Sabbath all the more.  It was a wonderful Sabbath, one that brought much more meaning to our Sundays that I’m sure none of us will soon forget!

Everyone pitched in to make this very special setting

He’s Home!

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

This morning we were blessed to be a part of welcoming HOME and celebrating the arrival of our nephew/cousin, Titus!  How exciting to see Kevin and Alicia (Chris’ brother and SIL) walk off the plane holding their first child.  Parenthood suits them well and they acted as if they had been with Titus since the day he was born.

We well know what it’s like to have traveled more than 24 hours and we were quite impressed with how alert and great all three looked.  Titus was bright-eyed and talkative and gave out smiles.  He was especially infatuated with the balloons we had greeted him with.  America’s newest citizen didn’t even mind being passed around by all of his adoring fans!  We enjoyed some more time with him and family for brunch before letting them head on home to crash and get into their new routine.

Welcome home, Titus!  We love you and look forward to many more days together.

School 2010-2011

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

We are officially back to school today.  We had quite a long summer break and most of us are feeling ready to be back into more of a routine.  So it’s back to a scheduled wake-up call and ready to start school by 8 am.

Michaela is starting high school this year, 9th grade.  After research and prayer we decided to continue homeschooling and to continue with My Father’s World curriculum.  The first year core is Bible (OT survey), Ancient History, and Literature with an emphasis on composition.  She is also adding Geometry (MathUSee), Physical Science (Apologia), Japanese (Rosetta Stone), Intro to Logic (elective from  MFW) 1st semester, Drafting (elective from MFW) 2nd semester, and Band (at a local Christian school).  She is also taking a SAT prep course over the next three years.  That’s a total of 8 credit hours and there is more to come.  She is a great self-starter and is doing most everything independently.  Love that first born!

Benjamin is now in 6th grade and Johanna is in 4th grade.  I still haven’t labeled Elijah, but that’s one thing I love about home schooling….I don’t have to!  For these three we are using My Father’s World, and are now in our fourth year with this curriculum. This year our focus is the Creation to the Greeks period.  All of the Bible, Science, and History center on this theme and it really helps give continuity to our studies.  All three of them use MathUSee, and the MFW recommendations for English,  Spelling, Art and Music.  Benjamin and Johanna are in their second year of Japanese, and Elijah is studying Chinese on a computer program.

Ami isn’t kindergarten age until next year, but I decided to start her on the MFW kindergarten curriculum and just do half this year and half next year.  We’ll see how it goes, but she seems more than ready and it will help me to break it up and give her the time that she needs.  She was very excited to have her “own” school today.   She also frequently joins in with the older kids depending on what activities we are doing.  It always amazes me what she picks up.

I’m sure I’ve left something out, but that sure seems like enough, doesn’t it?!  We only have one in organized sports this fall.  Elijah is doing soccer, so that gives us a bit of a break.  Michaela has logged at least a semester worth of PE hours with her hiking and biking this summer.

Our morning went pretty smoothly, probably my smoothest start to a home schooling year.  We took a break at lunch and picked up sandwiches and met Chris at the park.  One day down, how many to go???

My goofy kids surprised me with grapes this morning and said, “Good Morning, Teacher.”  They wanted to give me apples, but there were none to be found.  Ha!

State Fair

Friday, August 20th, 2010

I have only been to our state fair one other time (11 years ago) and yesterday I was reminded of why I haven’t been back in so long.  It’s too stinkin’ hot and humid!!  Other than sweating buckets, we had a great time.  This was kind of our last hurrah of summer so we rode some rides, ate cotton candy and other fair junk food, petted some animals, were amazed at the corralling work of the cowboys (and girls), cheered for pigs in the pig races, and were wowed by the adorable jumping dogs, all the while trying to keep hydrated with water.

I love the look on Elijah's face, as Benjamin has no idea what's about to hit him. Ha!

Barely tall enough (3 ft) to ride the kiddie rides on her own

Yes, that would be my goofy Johanna fanning herself and dramatizing how hot it was.

We got home just in time to shovel down some supper and get Elijah to his first soccer practice.  I believe summer is officially over and our fall routine has begun.  Michaela started school on Monday and the rest of us will start this coming Monday.  I’ve been in the final throes of preparation and am excited and ready to start learning with the kids again.

To the train

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

We took Grandpa and Grandma down to JC today to catch the train to KC.  GG Wolfe have used the train a few times this summer to get around and it has worked out very nicely.  The kids were quite interested in how it all worked (especially Elijah).  We may or may not get to see them again before they head back to Russia.

You can barely see Grandma waving back at us as Johanna blows a kiss

On a totally different note, my eldest is growing up!  She started high school this week (at home).  It still hasn’t sunk in with me.  Oh my!

And on another note…Ami has been very into coloring and cutting the last two days.  She has spent a LONG time very carefully coloring Strawberry Shortcake printouts and then cutting them out.  I am amazed at her scissor skills.  They are better than mine!

Check out the determination on her little face

"Mommy, please take a picture of me."

Such pride. And notice the two little black marker dots on her nose. :)

More time with Grandparents

Monday, August 16th, 2010

We are enjoying more time with grandparents here; this time with Grandpa and Grandma Wolfe.  Michaela and I had a couple of days to get settled back at home before GG Wolfe arrived last Thursday.  The kids have had lots of fun playing games with them and doing other activities.  We also got to celebrate Grandpa’s birthday with him last week.

On another note, it was two years ago yesterday that we received a call (different post from the first link) from our agency that we had officially been matched with Zhu Fengfei, our Elijah.  We had known in our hearts for a year that we were a match, but it just took that long for the CC*A to acknowledge that.  :)   What an incredibly happy day that was!

Backpacking in Yosemite

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

It’s hard to know where to start or how to capture our trip in a nut shell, but I will try.  Michaela and I had been training for this trip for over three months.  She faithfully got up with me early each morning to hike two miles up and down our hill and around our neighborhood, adding weight regularly to our packs.  This was to be an 8th grade graduation gift to her, although she had to work at it!

We flew out to CA on July 29th with my parents, closing their four week stay with us (BTW, Mom is doing great after her two cataract surgeries).  We landed in SF and stayed with my brother for two nights. Unfortunately Jeremy was unable to join us on the pack as originally planned, due to work.  We enjoyed In-N-Out, good coffee, and great Mexican food with him, though.

We headed for Yosemite on the 31st with a couple of stops along the way.  The first stop was to visit with my aunt, uncle and some cousins for a BBQ and family time.  Although our time was short, it was so good to see them again.  Uncle Marvin has battled cancer this last year and it was wonderful to see him up and about looking so good.  The second stop was to visit some supporters of my parents mission work.  They live only an hour away from Yosemite.  Oh, the beauty!

We arrived into the Park about 11 pm, but needed to wait in line all that night to be first in line when the ranger station opened at 7:30 am to give out wilderness permits.  The ladies tried to sleep in the car while Dad slept on the “porch” of the office.  I checked in on him a couple of times and he was quite cozy sleeping on his camping pad snuggled down in his sack.  By the time the office opened there were more than a dozen people in line and we thankfully received the permit for the trailhead we had requested.

We spent the day enjoying Yosemite Valley.  I have been there several times, but never tire of it’s beauty.  We had dinner and paid for our last showers.  We camped that night in a campground in Tuolemne Meadows.

Monday morning we were ready to head out on our much anticipated backpacking adventure.  We hiked roughly 8 miles in and about 4,000 ft up to our first stop at Evelyn Lake.  We weren’t very far in when we all stepped off the trail to allow a horse train to pass us.  Dad accidentally took a misstep and tumbled and rolled down a large rock with his 50 pound pack on.  It was quite scary, as we didn’t know how badly injured he was.  He said that his Special Forces training kicked into gear and he just fell and rolled as when he jumped from airplanes.  Fortunately he just scraped up his elbows and one knee.  Thank you God!  Our trip could have been cut so very short.

We spent three nights at Evelyn and took some day hikes around the area and spent a lot of time fishing.  Grandpa gave Michaela some good training and she enjoyed the thrill of the “hunt”.

On Thursday we hiked down a different trail back towards Tuolemne.  It was a lot of descent, and despite preparation and training, all of our calves were sore the next couple of days.  Fortunately my knee that had been giving me problems did great.  Hiking poles are a saver!

We spent two nights by Lyell Creek in the canyon and enjoyed some more spectacular views.  The mosquitoes were hardly present at the lower elevation and that was a welcome relief.  BUT, I missed the mountain top views.

On Saturday we hiked out the last four miles and it was mostly flat terrain.  It was a very nice ending to our other days on the trail.  It was great to get back to the car and find it intact as well as the few items we had left in the bear proof boxes.

We spent Saturday night and Sunday night with my aunt and uncle on the coast.  We enjoyed church service with them and then on Sunday night my aunt was part of a choir that gave an amazing concert.  They sang old negro spirituals.  It was also sort of a fundraiser for an incredible organization we learned about, Music Camp International.  (They do music camps for orphans in Eastern Europe with amazing results.  So impressive!)

Mom and Dad dropped us off at the airport on Monday afternoon.  Despite being ready to head home and see the rest of our family, it was hard to say goodbye.  We had a great six weeks with them, combining our time together in MO and CA.  What a very special treat for Michaela to experience a backpacking trip in Yosemite with her grandparents.

We arrived home about 10:30 pm and Chris had let the kids stay up to greet us.  What a wonderful sight to be home and give and receive lots of hugs and kisses.  Chris, you are too good to me.  I am so very blessed.  I didn’t do any fishing in Yosemite, but I’ve got the best catch of all here at home!  I love you!

I forewarned you that there would be a TON of photos.  I captioned most of them and they will fill in more parts of our time on the trip.  Believe me, I left out SO many pictures and stories.  Maybe I’ll blog some more as they come to mind.  I hope you enjoy seeing a bit of God’s amazing creation that we enjoyed!

Birthday Week

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Yes, it’s another birthday.  Chris’ birthday is today, just two days after Michaela’s.  In July we eat lots of cake.  :)

The kids were up early to give Daddy treats and to enjoy donuts (his chosen breakfast) with him before he headed off to work.  We have company coming in tonight and will enjoy dinner together along with our chocolate cake.

I know I just bragged on my last post about Michaela, but today is Chris’ turn.  Our family is blessed beyond measure to have Chris as our spiritual family leader.  He is hardworking, not just at his job away from home, but here at home as well.  He takes the kids individually on regular “Daddy Dates” (weekly dates for Mama, too!), plays games with them, fixes countless broken toys, helps the kids with projects (mainly the boys’ inventions), and loves and pampers his wife.  We take Chris way too much for granted and are glad that we can stop today and celebrate him as our super Dad and Husband.  We love you!

(This was supposed to be posted yesterday, but I can’t get pictures to upload.  Wanted to make sure my birthday post gets out for Chris anyway, though.)

Just because

Just some pictures for fun and so that I don’t get behind in blogging again…..

ggc

We’ve been having a great month with GG Clark here.  We enjoyed a special evening with them on Thursday night by taking everyone out to see a great production of Fiddler on the Roof.  When I was in Jr. High I played the youngest daughter in a local college production.  Fiddler has always been a favorite of my family and it was neat to pass on that love to my own kids.  Now the kids are all walking around singing “Tradition, tradition!!!” and saying “Mozel tov!”, along with many other lines.  I love making memories with the family.

My mom had another successful cataract surgery on Wednesday.  After 60 years of glasses and contacts she no longer needs any visual assistance, not even reading glasses.  Isn’t that incredible?!  She says it’s weird not to take out her contacts at night.  I am so happy for her.
