Johanna’s glasses

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Johanna was very excited to pick up her new glasses today.  On the way there she asked if she could get ice-cream because she knew this was a special occasion.  :)   It was just the two of us, so it was fun to make a memory together.

We also had another follow-up x-ray for Elijah’s arm.  The doctor was quite impressed with the bone growth and how much it had straightened out.  We will go back once more later this summer to check on his growth plates.

P.S.  I’m going to have to work on photographing with no glare on the glasses!

Skating and band contest

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Our church had a skating party today and the kids all had fun.  (Well, Ami went around the rink once and decided it was not her thing!)  It was Elijah’s first time skating and I’m happy to not be reporting any more broken bones.  He won an award for “Caught Being Brave” and also got 2nd place in the limbo!

Michaela also participated in a band contest today by playing a solo on her flute.  She earned a first place rating out of five!  We are so proud of her and know that she deserves this from all her hard work and practice.

Spring

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I think spring is really finally here.  It is gorgeous here today, so we finished up school and headed down to the creek for a picnic.  If I allowed them, the kids would stay down there all day.  Sometimes they skip rocks, other times they are into floating boats down the creek, other times they try to build dams.  Today was mostly about collecting all the wild onions they could find.  I think their hands are going to smell like onions for quite some time!

On another note….. I think Elijah is going to be our accident-prone kid.  Maybe he’s just growing into his ten year old body, but he does seem to have a knack for um, let’s say just being a little klutzy.  :)   The other day he tripped while playing in the woods and fell into a piece of wood he was carrying.  He called it a “triangle wood” (yes, we’ve been working on shapes!).  Evidently none of the kids thought it was too serious because it wasn’t until about an hour later when I called them in for supper that I saw his bloody and swollen eye.  It looks even worse now as it is healing and becoming more discolored.

I’ve also been recording some of Elijah’s fun English.  He is doing SO well and everyone is floored at how much he has progressed.  Okay, here are some things I hear a lot:

“What doing?”  (For what is that, or what are you doing, or where are you going….)

“Mommy”

“What dat for?”  (For just about anything and everything, he is very inquisitive.)

“Mommy”

“My don’t like that.”  or “My go to outside.” (He uses “my” for “I”.)

“Mommy”

“Somesing” or “My all done map (math)” (th is difficult)

“Mommy”

“In good afternoon my go to outside.” Or “In good morning I see Daddy wake me up”

“Mommy”

“Jie jie” (he still most often calls Michaela “big sister” in Chinese, everyone else is by their name)

“Mommy” and “Mommy”  :)   He talks a LOT about anything and everything.  Even as I walk through the room he just says “Mommy” just to say something.  As much as the repetition of “mommy, mommy” can start to drive me crazy, it holds so much meaning.  I guess he just needs to make up for time with no one to call mommy and I’ll be more than happy to oblige!

Two years ago

We received a CD in the mail with nearly 400 photos of Elijah from his 1.5 years at PHF.  Wow, what a gift.  Thank you SO much Leah for this treasure.  We had seen many of them, but there were also several new ones.  Elijah loved looking through them and wanted to tell stories with each one.  He has such good memories of his time at PHF and it was indeed a safe haven for him.    You can see such a huge transformation from the first pictures to the last.  I’ll post just a couple here.

When he arrived at PHF in April 2007:

Preparing for open heart surgery in June 2007:

Another neat thing I wanted to blog about is that Elijah started praying last week!  Each evening after our family devotions the kids take turns praying and once in a while we would ask Elijah if he wanted to pray, but he always said no.  Last Thursday when it was prayer time he excitedly announced that he wanted to pray, too and now he ALWAYS wants to pray.  Can you say, WOW, thank you Jesus!!  I look at the above pictures of him just two years ago and am amazed by this transformation.  Not only has his physical heart been healed, but his spiritual and emotional heart has begun to heal and most important of all he has been hearing about THE ONE that can heal all and now he is TALKING to the ONE that can heal all.  WOW!!  To steal a phrase from a bloggy friend of mine, this is one of those “Miracle-Working, Mountain-Moving, Awe-Inspiring, Gasp-Giving God” things.  Amen?

Weekend in KC

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

What started out as a family trip ended up being another weekend away for Michaela and me.  We just got to do this last month, so it was a treat for us to spend the weekend together again.  Our trip was dual-purpose; we got to attend the homeschool conference and Michaela participated with her band in the the Jazz Band Festival.  Michaela and her friends did a great job performing in front of the judges.  It was a great experience for them as this is where the heart of jazz is, the premier jazz museum in the country, the famous Blue Room where Louis Armstrong and other greats have performed, etc.

The conference renewed my spirits.  It was great to be encouraged and be reminded of why we are a homeschooling family.  I attended several workshops and of course bought all sorts of fun stuff.  We are looking forward to cracking open our new curriculum in the fall.

While Michaela and I were away Chris kept the rest of the bunch occupied.  They ate pizza and watched movies, went geocaching, and had a few other special treats that Daddy likes to pull out when Mommy is gone.  :)

Happy Birthday, Johanna!

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I know that I tend to blog more about Elijah than the other kids, but of course that’s because he’s the one going through so many changes right now.  But I have four other awesome kids that I love dearly, each with their own wonderful personalities and gifts.

Today we are celebrating JOHANNA.  Actually, her birthday is tomorrow but because of some other things going on we are celebrating today.  Eight years ago Johanna Nicole was born to us, born of my womb, and we anxiously waited through labor to see if “the baby” was a boy or a girl.  She was a wonderful bit of sweetness, weighing in at 7 lbs. 13 oz. with a head full of dark brown hair and beautiful blue eyes.  We were overjoyed, and “finished” with our family.  Ha, ha!

Johanna is our most social one.  She loves to play and laugh.  Not much gets her down and she is very quick to forgive.  She is a snuggler and a lover.  We are very proud of the young lady that she is becoming and can’t wait to see what God has planned for her future.

Oh, for her “special” birthday meal she chose noodles, baked beans and corn-on-the-cob.  Since corn isn’t in season she said strawberries would suit.  Funny girl.  :)

He Has Risen!

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

This has been a special Easter week for us.  During our school week we were studying the 5th chapter of James.  It’s not necessarily about the resurrection, but a couple of verses gave us a lot to talk about.  “Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…..You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near….The Judge is standing at the door!” (vs 7-9)  This brought up a lot of discussion about being ready for Christ to return and the hope that we have because of the resurrection.

We also attended the Maundy Thursday service at church and then of course had a wonderful worship time this morning.  Chris and I watched The Passion of the Christ last night and were once again deeply moved.  It’s so humbling to think of what Christ went through for me, to know that he stepped down from the highest place imaginable and suffered unimaginable things to show His love for me.  I am also reminded of the evening that Elijah watched the Jesus Film for the first time shortly after we had arrived home.  He cried, literally sobbed, at Christ’s crucifixion.  Oh, to have the heart of a child, to see the story of Christ again as if for the first time.  Here is my original post about that.

So from our house to yours we wish you a happy Easter, full of hope and joy.  He has risen!

Coloring Eggs

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Last night the kids had fun coloring eggs.  Elijah has colored eggs before at PHF, so he knew what we were up to.  I distinctly remember coloring eggs with the kids last year and thinking, “Elijah will be with us next time we do this!”.  Yes, indeed!  First is a picture from last year, then photos from last night.

Daddy date

Sunday, April 12th, 2009

Ever since Michaela was about two years old, Chris has been taking the kids on individual breakfast dates, usually on a Saturday morning.  They get to choose where to eat, but they often choose the local donut shop.  Chris used to rotate once a month with the kids, but as our family has grown he has needed to date more than once a month so that the kids don’t have to wait half a year for a date.  :)   Now he pretty much takes one child out every Saturday that he can so that they don’t have to wait so long for their special time with him.  Yesterday was Ami’s first “Daddy date” and she was quite happy about it.  She also chose the donut shop and came home with quite a chocolate mustache and beard around her mouth.  :)   Thanks, Chris, for being a wonderful Daddy to our kids!  When is my turn for a date?  ;-)
