Johanna and Ami wore their matching dresses to church this morning. Johanna’s is actually Michaela’s hand-me-down, but Ami’s still barely fits her. Good thing we’re headed to China soon so that we can buy a few more!

And another shot

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008Along with living in the woods come the creatures with whom we share the woods. We frequently have unwanted “visitors” that come in the cat door of the garage and check to see if the cats have left them anything to eat. This guy seemed to have no fear and let me take several pictures. The cats finally hissed enough and scared him off. Don’t worry Dad, we have still managed to keep them off the bird feeders!
Faith, Hope and LOVE (the greatest of these!)
Tuesday, August 26th, 2008Today in the mail I received a very special card and gift from the Philip Hayden Foundation. They were congratulating us on our referral of Elijah and gave me a charm necklace with the Chinese characters for faith, hope, and love. Wow! So very thoughtful and meaningful!
There is also a story for the necklace on the left. During Ami’s “pregnancy” I daily wore a Born In My Heart necklace, then “retired” it once she was in my arms. I chose to carry on the tradition during our wait for Elijah and throughout this “pregnancy” I have worn a heart shaped necklace with the Chinese symbol for love in the center. These necklaces are a treasure to me, I hope to pass them down to Ami and Elijah as a tangible symbol of our desire and wait for each of them to join our family. Thank you PHF for this beautiful gift that is a wonderful compliment to our necklace tradition. I will wear them both daily with joyful anticipation of our uniting with Elijah!

Waiting for Elle and Ami, July 2006
Two years ago today…
Monday, August 25th, 2008…we received our first picture of a very sweet baby girl waiting for us in China. We had received our referral call the day before and rejoiced greatly. It was the next day that we received one email photo, then a little while later the FedEx stork delivered our full paperwork and these photos.
Looking at those tiny fingers makes me ache to have missed those early days and months with Ami. The thought of missing almost ten years of Elijah’s life makes me ache even more. But I trust in our heavenly Father and know His timing is perfect. He knits families together just as He knits each of us in the womb. Even though I wasn’t there for the first few months of Ami’s life, nor the first few years of Elijah’s life, God knew. He kept them, He held them, He numbered the hairs on their heads. After all, these precious children are not mine, but His. They are but a very, very special gift to me to hold but for a time. Happy referral day little Li Dan!
Super Ami!
Monday, August 25th, 2008A fun evening
Saturday, August 23rd, 2008First of all, happy 3rd birthday to our sweet niece and cousin, Katia Grace! We love you and miss you!
We had a yummy dinner at Cracker Barrel this evening, then headed out to watch a hot air balloon event near our house. Benjamin was especially fascinated. There were about 20 balloons on the ground, and after dusk they would have everyone shout, “1, 2, 3, GLOW” and they would all light up at the same time. It was really pretty and there were lots of “oohs” and “aahs”. We bumped into our neighbors there, so their two daughters and Ami enjoyed a warm summer evening outside.
PHF video
Wednesday, August 20th, 2008One of the HUGE blessings of Elijah being at PHF is that they regularly post photos and videos on the web. Their ministry is ever growing and this year they have a major building project going on. Elijah and some friends just recently got to move into their newly built house, House of Love. Check out this video. He’s at about :57 eating in the yellow shirt swinging his legs, then again at 1:50 pretending to be a baby (SO like Benjamin, ha!). There are a couple of other shots of the kids at the table where you can see him.

- Favorite colors: “I love bright colors”
- Favorite toy: toy cars
- Personality type: very outgoing and a lot of fun to be around!
- Favorite song to sing: 5 Little Monkeys (I have no idea if this is the same as the American song, if so he’ll fit right in to make 5 Wolfe Monkeys!)
- Favorite movie to watch: Ultraman (very popular Chinese and Japanese hero)
- Favorite thing to do: play computer games (oh yeah, he’s a Wolfe boy!)
- Other activities that he likes: soccer, bike riding, watching TV, playing games, playing with toys
- Other tidbits: He is helpful with the younger children and caretakers, the other children all like to play with him
- So like Benjamin: He can make different sounds with his mouth! He probably also shares the talent of making sounds with his armpit. Ha, ha!
- Special need: Follow-ups to his heart surgery have been very promising, but he will always be considered at some risk for further complications due to his congenital heart disease. Please continue to pray with us!
The day of THE CALL
Monday, August 18th, 2008Since August had arrived we were optimistic that this would be the month of our call. Last Wednesday we saw through the Internet that a new batch of special needs children had been posted to the shared agency list. The day came and went and there was no call. I was still hopeful because the last few months the CCAA had posted shared referrals over 2-3 days. Then Thursday came and went with no phone call. I was feeling a bit discouraged that evening wondering when it would ever come. I was sitting at the computer typing email and Ami came part way down the stairs and said, “Mommy something happened. I tell you secret.” So I went over to her, bent over to put my ear close to hear and she said, “Elijah coming my house. Two brothers, Elijah and Benjamin.” Yes, I cried! That was just the encouragement I needed. Thank you God for speaking to and through my children! There have been other instances similar to this that have spoken profoundly of the connection that Ami feels with Elijah. It’s uncanny and I can’t explain it other than to say that she knows and feels something deeper, way deeper.
So Friday morning the phone rang just after 9 am. Our agency is in Virginia (an hour ahead of us) and I thought that it could possibly be them calling. The updated list would have been there when they arrived to work that morning since China would have posted them during Asia’s daytime hours. I looked at Michaela with a big smile and answered to hear a voice say, “This is Melissa…..” The first thought that went through my mind was that our social worker (Melissa) was just calling to let us know that China had updated the special needs list this week, but that Elijah’s file still wasn’t on it. Maybe it would come later. Instead she said, “I have some good news!” I don’t even remember what I said, but there was suddenly lots of screaming coming from my four kids at home!! They were shouting, “WE GOT IT! WE GOT IT!” What a precious, precious moment in our lives together. A beautiful moment that we had waited for for so long. I did try to get the video camera going, but of course it was out of tape. I do remember Melissa saying a couple of times, “That’s okay, I’ll wait, enjoy the moment.” I tried to regain some composure and let the screams subside so that I could hear the rest of the news. Elijah’s file had been placed on the shared agency list, but AWAA had been able to lock it in for our family right away. No one else had been able to touch it, we were matched! She said she would be sending us an email right away with Elijah’s full file and photos and to call with any questions. I knew I would be calling fairly soon because I could hardly remember half of what she told me!
We used the speaker phone and tried calling Chris at work right away, but his phone kept going right to voice mail. Finally after the fourth attempt he answered the phone. He had been in a meeting and wondered why we were so persistent and figured he better answer the call. Good figuring Daddy of Elijah!!! We opened the email from work and home at the same time. The photos were all from last fall when his file was first started, so of course we already had much better and more recent photos. But it was a joy to see his file and photos, just for us!
We enjoyed making other phone calls to share the good news, but also had to get to work on some more paperwork. An agency is only able to “lock in” a file for 48 hours before it is released to the whole list again. Because of the weekend ahead, we had to have our Letter of Intent in by 3pm EST. We had previously drafted this letter in preparation and had also sent the other necessary documents to AWAA, but we now had to have a physician review Elijah’s file and give us a brief plan of action that we could include in the letter. I will write more about Elijah’s special need later, but in short he has had congenital heart disease, but has had heart surgery to repair it. At this point he should only need yearly follow-ups. We had previously contacted a pediatric cardiologist that was willing to look at Elijah’s file on short notice, so we emailed the information to him and got the reply we needed. We got everything faxed to AWAA and they sent our Electronic Acceptance to China before the close of business on Friday.
Phew, what a day! It finally came. I feel like we are now in the next chapter of the journey. There is more to prepare for, more to research, more to look forward to!
These referral photos were likely taken last November when Elijah’s file was being put together.
